When Swiss Precision Meets Czech Aviation Engineering: The Story of Horizon Swiss Flight Academy

In the world of professional flight training, aircraft selection isn’t just about specifications on paper. It’s about reliability when you’re putting 50 students through their paces every year. It’s about whether your instructors trust the platform enough to take a nervous PPL student through their first solo. And it’s about whether that aircraft will still be turning heads on the ramp while delivering consistent performance five years down the line.

That’s exactly why Horizon Swiss Flight Academy’s recent decision to add Bristell to their training fleet caught our attention. As one of Switzerland’s largest flight schools and a sister company to Helvetic Airways, their standards aren’t just high—they’re airline-level. When they invest in new aircraft, they’re not just thinking about today’s training flights. They’re thinking about the pilots who’ll be sitting in the left seat of an Embraer E2 or an Airbus A320 five years from now.

The Decision That Wasn’t Really a Decision

This wasn’t an interview over email. It happened in Kunovice, during the handover of two new Bristell aircraft to Horizon Swiss Flight Academy. While the aircraft were being prepared for departure to Switzerland, we spoke with instructors and experienced pilots — Marc Lüchinger and Urs Engesser — about why their choice was so straightforward.

When asked whether they had considered other manufacturers, the team clarified that they had evaluated several options. However, the decision quickly converged on the B23 — thanks to its value for money, strong reputation, and positive experience from partner flight schools.

But this wasn’t a leap of faith. It was a decision built on something more valuable than brochures and demo flights: real-world experience from their partner schools. Horizon Swiss Flight Academy had been watching Bristell’s performance in flight training operations in Switzerland for years. They’d seen the dispatch reliability. They’d heard the feedback from instructors who were actually flying these aircraft day in, day out. And perhaps most tellingly, they’d noticed a pattern that’s hard to ignore in Swiss aviation: almost every flight school buying new aircraft was choosing Bristell.“Bristell is currently one of the most successful aircraft in Switzerland,” they told us. “Nearly every school that buys new aircraft buys Bristell.” When you’re making a decision that will impact your operation for the next decade, that kind of market validation matters.

The Right Tool for the Job: Why They Chose the B23–912iS

Here’s where Horizon’s choice gets interesting. They opted for the Rotax 912iS configuration—the 100 hp version—when higher-powered options were available. It might seem counterintuitive, but their reasoning reveals a sophisticated understanding of flight training economics and pedagogy.

The aircraft will primarily serve students building time between their PPL and CPL licenses. These aren’t hours where you need maximum performance. These are hours where you need maximum reliability, predictable handling, and—let’s be honest—operational efficiency. “It’s not a rocket,” they said with characteristic Swiss pragmatism, “but for hour-building, for our purpose, it’s enough.”

This decision reflects something we see too rarely in aviation: matching the aircraft precisely to the mission rather than over-specifying because the capability exists. It’s the kind of operational thinking that keeps costs manageable while maintaining training quality—exactly what sustainable flight schools need.

Flying Characteristics That Change Student Perspectives

The real test of any training aircraft isn’t what the manufacturer claims—it’s what happens when you put a student pilot in the left seat. And this is where the feedback from Horizon gets particularly interesting.

Their instructors describe the Bristell as exceptionally stable and calm to handle. Stall recovery, they note, is among the easiest they’ve experienced. But perhaps the most telling endorsement came from an unexpected source: a student who’d done his PPL on a legacy training aircraft. His reaction after his first flight in the Bristell? “Whoa, what is this?!”

That response isn’t just about the comfort of a newer aircraft. It’s about the difference between learning in an environment designed in the 1970s versus one that incorporates modern thinking about situational awareness and cockpit design. The Garmin G3X glass cockpit with synthetic vision option isn’t just impressive technology—it’s preparing students for the glass cockpits they’ll encounter in their airline careers. The ballistic parachute isn’t just a safety feature—it’s teaching decision-making and risk management in ways that simply weren’t possible in older training aircraft.

One of their instructors emphasized this point about situational awareness: “With the synthetic vision you have as an option, the parachute, and the efficiency with the engine—at the moment, I think there is no other aircraft like the Bristell B23.” When you’re training pilots who’ll need to demonstrate competencies in situational awareness, procedure management, and decision-making for evidence-based training requirements, that matters.

The Design Story: More Than Just Paint

Anyone who’s seen Horizon’s Bristell on the ramp has probably noticed the striking red and blue color scheme. There’s a story there that reveals something about both the school and their relationship with BRM Aero.

“Our CEO originally wanted just one color,” they recalled with a laugh. “Then the staff told him, ‘Hey no, you can’t do just one color—how boring!’ So we went for the Horizon colors, red and blue, matching our logo.”

The customization process worked smoothly. When they requested the small opening windows in the canopy—a detail they’d learned from their partner schools about managing summer heat—BRM Aero accommodated without hesitation. It’s the kind of attention to operator feedback that distinguishes manufacturers who see aircraft delivery as the beginning of a relationship rather than the end of a transaction.

Beyond the Sale: The Family Company Difference

If you talk to enough flight school operators, you’ll hear versions of the same story: great aircraft, disappointing support. Horizon’s experience with BRM Aero runs counter to that narrative in ways that matter operationally.

“What impressed us is how they’re really trying to help you solve problems,” one of their instructors explained. “It’s not just you pay for the aircraft and that’s it.” He cited a specific example: a Swiss glider towing club experienced oil temperature issues during summer operations with heavy gliders. BRM Aero didn’t just acknowledge the problem—they worked actively on solutions, including modifications like a second oil cooler.

“That’s what we feel as customers,” they said. “You’re still a family company.”

The team also mentioned their visit to the manufacturing facility in Kunovice. They came away impressed not just by the cleanliness and organization—though that matters—but by the transparency of the process and the friendliness of the team. In an industry where “factory visit” is often perfunctory marketing, their genuine enthusiasm suggested they’d seen something that resonated with their own values about how to run a quality operation.

Alpine Operations: Performance Where It Counts

Switzerland means mountains. And mountains mean flight schools need aircraft that perform reliably in conditions that would make many trainers struggle. The feedback here was unequivocal: “The performance is more than enough, and if you’re considering flying in the mountains, the turbo version is a big advantage.”

It’s worth noting that Horizon isn’t alone in reaching this conclusion. The pattern of Swiss flight schools consistently choosing Bristell isn’t coincidental—it’s a direct response to the aircraft’s proven performance in exactly the kind of demanding operations that Swiss aviation requires. When you’re training in the Alps, theoretical performance numbers matter less than how the aircraft actually handles when your student is learning mountain flying in real conditions.

What This Means for Other Flight Schools

Toward the end of our conversation, we asked what Horizon would tell other schools considering Bristell. Their advice was remarkably straightforward: start by talking to operators who already fly them. The reference list speaks for itself.

Second, consider carefully which engine configuration fits your environment and training profile. The B23–912iS is exceptionally efficient for time-building and day-to-day training. The B23–915iS, well-suited for VFR programmes, offers significantly more performance where it’s needed. The upcoming B23–916iS delivers maximum capability in high-altitude operations. With fuel-efficient Rotax powerplants, MOGAS/Avgas capability, low emissions and a TBO rated up to 2,000 hours, Bristell aircraft are engineered to keep operating costs predictable and training sustainable.

Third, communicate with BRM Aero. Whether it’s customization, technical support or problem-solving, Horizon emphasized that the manufacturer’s involvement continues long after delivery. The combination of modern avionics, integrated flight-analysis tools, and a 24/7 spare-parts and technical support network makes daily operations smoother, safer and more efficient.

But perhaps the most important message isn’t what they said—it’s what their decision demonstrates. When a highly professional operation with direct connections to major European airlines, training 50 ATPL students annually, chooses an aircraft without looking at alternatives, that’s not impulse. That’s confidence built on real-world performance.

The Growing Swiss Bristell Community

Horizon Swiss Flight Academy’s aircraft represent part of a remarkable expansion in Switzerland. In 2025 alone, eight new Bristell aircraft joined the Swiss fleet, bringing the total to 30 aircraft now operating in Swiss and European skies. The latest delivery was a B23-915 Turbo that joined Ecoflight’s fleet in Mollis, bringing their Turbo Bristell count to four, including one with IFR equipment.

Four of these new additions are the recently CS23-certified B23-912iS with its fuel-efficient 100 hp Rotax injection engine and single lever control. Two went to ASFG Ausserschwyzer Fluggemeinschaft Wangen, and two joined Kreutzer Aviation, which have been purchased by Horizon Swiss Flight Academy for the training of their flight students. The model is proving ideal for basic training while simultaneously serving as a state-of-the-art touring aircraft.

As winter approaches and these 30 Bristell aircraft continue their operations over snowy Switzerland, the fleet represents more than just market success—it demonstrates what happens when aircraft capabilities align precisely with operator needs, backed by genuine manufacturer support.

BRM AERO Wins Innovation Company of the Year with Bristell B23 Energic

BRM AERO wins Czech Republic’s most prestigious regional innovation award for pioneering electric aviation

At BRM AERO in Kunovice, Czech Republic, we design and manufacture modern Czech aircraft under the Bristell brand for training and travel. We’re honored to announce that our Bristell B23 Energic has been recognized as the winner of the Innovation Company of Zlín Region 2025 competition, presented on November 24, 2025, at Holešov Castle.

Our goal is to make pilot training quieter, cleaner, and more accessible – without compromising safety or performance.

90 Years of Aviation Heritage

The Zlín Region in eastern Czech Republic has been the heart of European aviation manufacturing since Tomáš Baťa established an aircraft factory here in 1934. Over 15,000 aircraft have been built in this region and exported to 60+ countries worldwide. Out of 28 competing companies, the jury selected Bristell B23 Energic for transforming pilot training with zero-emission flight, 90%+ operational cost savings, and significantly lower noise.

Our electric revolution isn’t a departure from this heritage – it’s the natural continuation of 90 years of pioneering.

From Vision to Market Reality

The B23 Energic was developed and integrated in Kunovice in partnership with Swiss company H55, building on the legacy of the Solar Impulse project. What began in 2019 has steadily evolved into a mature and proven platform. Over several years of testing and demonstration flights—conducted both in Europe and later across the United States—the aircraft consistently showed excellent reliability, generating strong market interest for the first production years (2026–2027).

The Energic offers 60 minutes of flight time, fast charging, and operational costs more than 90% lower than conventional trainers. It’s pioneering the FAR-23/CS-23 category in electric aviation.

Scaling Up: 100 New Jobs in 5 Years

We’re breaking ground on a specialized 2M EUR production hangar in December 2025. This isn’t just about the B23 Energic – the new facility enables multiple parallel development programs for new aircraft models that have been in preparation, waiting for proper production capability.

Electric aircraft manufacturing demands specialized infrastructure that can’t be retrofitted: anti-static flooring, high-voltage systems (800V), and battery-safe assembly environments. But once built, this facility opens doors to the next generation of Bristell aircraft.

Our vision: grow from 140 to 240+ employees over the next five years as we scale B23 Energic production and launch new models. We’re establishing a production ecosystem ready for aviation’s next chapter. We’re continuously hiring to meet growing demand and prepare for expansion. As the new facilities come online, we’ll be looking for talent across all departments. If you’ve ever wanted to work on technology that matters – where your contributions shape the future of aviation – this is your moment.

Thank You

This award belongs to everyone who believed in this vision:

To our team in Kunovice: You solved problems that had no textbook answers and made the impossible real.

To H55 and our partners: Your collaboration created something neither of us could have achieved alone.

To our dealers and early customers: Your confidence gave us the runway to perfect this technology.

You’ve all shown us we’re on the right path.

What’s Next

We’re preparing multiple projects, building new facilities, and looking forward to what’s coming. The journey from vision to reality took dedication – but the exciting part is just beginning.

Making pilot training quieter, cleaner, and more accessible – without compromising safety or performance. It’s happening now, and it’s happening in the Czech Republic.

Bristell Heads to the Middle East: New Dealer in the Region, Next Stop Dubai Air Show and Riyadh

A hangar in the middle of the desert, 60 km from Doha, temperatures exceeding 30°C, and a two-day intensive program. Our factory specialists from Kunovice have just completed training for mechanics and pilots at Aviation Home – our new dealer for the GCC region. You’ll see the results next week at Dubai Air Show 2025, where Aviation Home will showcase the Bristell B23 915 IFR. Right after Dubai, the aircraft will head to Sand n Fun in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Czech Know-How in Desert Conditions

“An airfield in the middle of the desert, 60 km from Doha – you immediately understand that aviation here is something completely different from Europe,” says Petr Mitáš, factory pilot-instructor who led our three-person specialist team including mechanics. They spent two working days at Aviation Home’s hangar, training local teams on the Bristell LSA and B23.

The official opening ceremony was attended by a representative of the Czech Embassy in Qatar, underlining the strategic importance of this expansion for Czech aviation technology in the region.

The program was packed – from theoretical briefings through hands-on maintenance to flight hours in the air. While Mitáš flew with pilots, going through the specifics of Bristell’s sensitive control handling, our mechanics broke down the construction, electrical systems including the Rotax 912 iS, Rotax 915 iS, and avionics software. “The teams from Aviation Home and Jazeera Aviation Club were perfectly prepared. You can see their professionalism and eagerness to learn,” Mitáš evaluates the level of trained specialists.

Why Flight Schools Choose the B23

The Bristell B23 is an ideal choice for flight schools thanks to a combination of several key features. “It’s an aircraft with modern Garmin avionics that students need to know for their future careers. It also has a constant speed propeller and robust construction – these are systems and features that pilots must master when transitioning to larger aircraft,” explains Mitáš.Another advantage is the sensitive control system, which teaches pilots precision. “When a pilot masters the B23, where every small movement of the control surfaces has an immediate response, they can handle almost anything afterward. It’s like switching from a sports car to a regular sedan – suddenly you have everything under control,” he adds with a smile.

Extreme Conditions as a Reliability Test

“An airfield in the middle of the desert, sand on the taxiways, temperatures over 30°C – you need to know how to work with that,” Mitáš describes the training conditions. In summer, temperatures in the region exceed 40°C, placing extreme demands on materials and systems.Bristell has more than a decade of reliable operation history in the Persian Gulf region. “We have customers who have been operating our aircraft in Dubai for over 10 years without problems. That’s the best proof that our construction and materials can handle these conditions,” Mitáš explains.

Aviation in Qatar – Regulation and Growth

General aviation in Qatar is still in its early stages but growing rapidly. “Unlike the Czech Republic, you can’t just take off for a ‘coffee flight.’ You must file a flight plan, everything is approved by controllers. The regulations here are much stricter,” Mitáš describes the local specifics.

Aviation Home plans to build its main base at Old Doha International Airport, just 2 km from the city center. This will create a modern hub for general aviation in Qatar with better accessibility for students and recreational pilots.

Light sport and general aviation in the region is growing – alongside traditional professional pilot training, a new trend is emerging: hourly desert flights, sightseeing, recreational flying. Aviation Home is building a school that can cover both areas.

Khalid Al-Khater, Founder of Aviation Home:

“After researching the market, I visited several manufacturers. When I saw the B23, I knew this was different – the build quality, the attention to detail, the way it handles. Bristell Welcomes Canada’s Aerospace Innovators

Last week, our manufacturing facility in Kunovice hosted a high-level delegation from Canada’s aerospace sector. Representatives from Aero MontréalSTRIX Aero, research centers from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Canada Aerospace spent the day touring our production lines, discussing collaborative opportunities, and exploring how Czech and Canadian aerospace industries can work together.

This visit was organized by the Czech Aerospace Cluster, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and the Czech Embassy in Ottawa—bringing together key players from both countries to foster innovation and cross-border collaboration in the aerospace sector.

For BRM Aero, this visit represents more than just a networking opportunity—it’s a strategic step toward establishing a stronger presence in the North American market and finding the right partners to bring Bristell aircraft to Canadian pilots and flight schools.

Why Canada Matters

Canada has one of the world’s most vibrant general aviation communities. With vast distances, challenging weather conditions, and a culture that values outdoor adventure flying, Canadian pilots need aircraft that deliver reliability, performance, and safety. Our FAA-certified Bristell B23 family is built for exactly this environment.

But entering a new market requires the right partners, the right infrastructure, and the right conversations. That’s what this delegation visit was all about.

Innovation in Focus

The Canadian delegation brought together experts from research institutions, innovation clusters, and leading aerospace manufacturers—representing some of the most advanced capabilities in materials science, collaborative R&D, and aircraft component manufacturing.

During the intensive three-hour visit, we showcased our production capabilities and discussed our ongoing B23 certification processes. The conversations quickly turned technical, exploring areas where collaboration could drive innovation—from advanced materials and manufacturing efficiency to testing partnerships and market access.

International collaboration isn’t just about selling aircraft—it’s about learning from each other and building solutions that work for pilots everywhere,” said Milan Bristela, co-founder of BRM Aero. “Canada has incredible aerospace expertise, and we’re excited to explore how we can work together to bring innovative, reliable aircraft to their market.

What We’re Looking For

This visit marks the beginning of what we hope will be a long-term relationship with Canadian aerospace stakeholders. Specifically, we’re actively seeking:

Dealer partnerships – We’re looking for experienced aviation professionals in Canada who share our commitment to quality, customer support, and pilot education. If you operate a flight school, FBO, or aircraft sales business in Canada and are interested in representing Bristell, we want to hear from you.

Research collaboration – Canada’s research institutions bring cutting-edge capabilities in advanced materials, avionics integration, and testing. We’re open to joint R&D projects that can enhance our aircraft and accelerate innovation.

The aircraft’s combination of advanced Garmin avionics, Rotax reliability, and superior handling characteristics makes it an ideal fit for cross-country flying, flight training, and personal aviation.

With variants ranging from the efficient B23-912iS to the high-performance B23-915 IFR, we offer solutions for different missions and budgets—all built with the same attention to detail and commitment to safety that has made Bristell a trusted name worldwide.

Let’s Start a Conversation

If you’re in Canada and interested in becoming part of the Bristell story—whether as a dealer, partner, or collaborator—we’d love to connect. The Canadian market represents a significant opportunity, and we’re committed to building relationships with people who share our passion for aviation and our vision for the future of flight.
